Learning Exchange: Modern Slavery and Children - Vulnerabilities and Windows of Intervention
Outline
This multi‑agency session will support professionals to recognise, understand and respond to modern slavery affecting children and young people. It will focus on how exploitation presents in practice, the vulnerabilities that increase risk, and opportunities for early, effective safeguarding intervention.
Delivered by police colleagues through a virtual presentation, the session will:
- Draw on recent case study learning to explore modern slavery in the context of child criminal exploitation (CCE), child sexual exploitation (CSE), county lines and cuckooing
- Provide insight into shifts in exploitation methods, organised crime group tactics, and key intelligence themes that inform identification and response
- Include drug awareness in the context of child exploitation, highlighting links between substance use, supply, grooming and increased vulnerability
The session will also explore co‑occurring factors that can increase vulnerability for children and young people, including SEND, neurodiversity and intersecting needs, alongside approaches to professional curiosity, information sharing and partnership working.
Who should attend?
Any practitioner working with children and families who may encounter risks linked to exploitation, modern slavery or contextual safeguarding.
Why attend?
To strengthen confidence in identifying risk, understanding emerging patterns of harm, and responding effectively within a multi‑agency safeguarding framework.
