Non-Fatal Strangulation (NFS) Training for Professionals
Non-fatal strangulation (NFS) is a serious form of violence commonly associated with domestic abuse, coercive control and sexual violence. It is recognised as one of the strongest indicators of escalating abuse and future serious harm, including homicide. Despite the significant risks, there may be little or no visible injury, making it vital that professionals understand how to identify, assess and respond effectively.
SafeLives, in partnership with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation, is offering a free introductory webinar designed to help professionals understand NFS legislation, recognise the signs and symptoms of strangulation, identify associated risks, and understand the impact on victims and survivors. The training also explores the links between non-fatal strangulation, domestic abuse and sexual violence, helping practitioners make accurate and timely risk assessments.
Why this matters for safeguarding children
Non-fatal strangulation should be viewed not simply as an assault on an adult victim, but as a significant safeguarding concern for any children connected to the family. Children who see, hear or experience the effects of domestic abuse are recognised as victims under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021. Where non-fatal strangulation has occurred, children may be living in a highly controlling and frightening environment, may have witnessed the incident, and may be experiencing significant emotional harm. The behaviour also demonstrates a willingness to use extreme violence and may indicate a direct risk to children within the household.
Professionals should treat non-fatal strangulation as a high-risk indicator, consider the impact on all children involved, and work with partner agencies to ensure appropriate safeguarding measures are in place.

The training is suitable for professionals working across safeguarding, children’s social care, education, health, police, early help, domestic abuse services and the voluntary sector who may encounter victims, survivors and families affected by domestic abuse.

Courses are free for the statutory, voluntary and community sector in Wakefield, however failure to attend without giving prior notice may result in a charge to cover costs.
