WSCP E-Bulletin May 2026 - Key Safeguarding Updates, Training & Campaigns
The May edition of the Wakefield Safeguarding Children Partnership (WSCP) e-bulletin is available for you to download. This latest edition highlights important safeguarding updates, new resources, and training opportunities for professionals working with children and families across the district.
Training and Learning Opportunities
Bookings are now open for Safeguarding Week, including a multi-agency webinar on modern slavery and child trafficking (24 June), focusing on emerging risks, exploitation trends and practical tools for early intervention.
A wide range of additional training is also available this month, covering topics such as child exploitation, neglect, parental mental health and safer sleep - check out the May edition of the WSCP Training Brochure to see what is on offer!
Seasonal Safety Messages
With warmer weather approaching, the e-bulletin stresses the importance of water safety, highlighting risks such as cold water shock and hidden hazards, and promoting the “Phone. Float. Throw.” campaign.
Families are also encouraged to follow advice on baby summer safety and safer sleep practices to reduce the risk of sudden infant death.
Campaigns and Awareness Initiatives
A new regional campaign, “Keep the Door Open,” aims to discourage knife carrying by showing young people the long-term consequences on their futures.
The e-bulletin also supports Child Safety Week (1–7 June), sharing free resources to help prevent accidents and injuries in the home and community.
New Resources and Guidance
Professionals can access a new WSCP One Minute Guide on building trusting relationships, alongside updated website content including professional curiosity guidance.
A newly launched Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel Learning Hub brings together national safeguarding insights, while updated resources from the CSA Centre support better information sharing to protect children from abuse.
National Updates and Sector Insights
The e-bulletin highlights key national safeguarding activity, including Home Office operations addressing exploitation, harmful practices and missing children.
Organisations are also urged to complete the National Youth Sector Census to help shape future investment and services for young people.
Support for Education Settings
New guidance and resources are available for schools, including materials on AI use in education, healthy relationships, and child sexual abuse prevention.
Regular DSL forums and updated toolkits continue to support safeguarding leadership across the district.
Top Safety Tips for Families
Practical advice shared this month includes awareness of blind cord risks, button battery dangers, water safety, garden hazards and BBQ burns, helping families keep children safe at home and outdoors.
