LADO Local Authority Designated Officer

Due to the Coronavirus the Wakefield Safeguarding LADO Marie Pettman and admin support are not working from their usual base. However, the service is still operating as usual on a normal full time service and the guidance for when to refer remains the same.

If you should wish to contact the LADO for any reason please follow the direction below:

To make a new referral:

Complete a referral form link and email to

Please include an email address and contact telephone number on which you can be reached for further discussion.

To speak to the LADO or LADO Admin:

Email a short message explaining the nature of your enquiry and request a call-back; please be sure to include a contact telephone number.

If you are calling about an open case please include the name of the staff member. The LADO will call you back from a mobile number.

Update the LADO regarding an ongoing case:

Email and the LADO will respond as needed.

 Important please note: If you believe a child is at risk of immediate harm, please do not wait for a response before contacting the Police or Children’s Social Care on 0345 8 503 503.

Concerned about a child’s safety?

If you have concerns about a child’s safety or well-being you should contact Social Care Direct, they will deal with your concerns and can offer advice and support on what to do.

Allegations against people who work with children

The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) is a statutory post.

All allegations against people who work with children (whether paid or voluntary) must be reported to the LADO on 01977 727032/

These allegations must fall within the scope of the procedure which is:

  • Behaved in a way that has harmed, or may harm a child
  • Possibly committed a criminal offence against or related to a child
  • Behaved towards a child/children in a way that indicates they may pose a risk of harm to children
  • Behaved in a way which indicates they are unsuitable to work with children

It is the role of the LADO to manage and have oversight of any such allegations, regardless of the agency that the person works for.

Working Together to Safeguard Children states that every member agency of the Safeguarding Children Partnership should have a Named Senior Officer and Senior Manager with responsibility for allegations against staff. Their main role is to receive information about allegations within their organisation, and to ensure that the procedure for referral to the LADO is followed.

All allegations within this procedure that come to the employer’s attention should be notified to the LADO within one working day. The LADO will discuss the matter with the senior manager and where necessary obtain further details of the allegation details and circumstances in which it was made. The LADO may arrange for an Allegations Management meeting to take place, to enable all relevant parties to discuss the allegation in context. The subject of the allegation would not be invited to attend this meeting.

There may be up to three strands in the consideration of an allegation:
•A police investigation of a possible criminal offence
•Enquiries and assessment by children’s social care about whether a child is in need of protection or in need of services
•Consideration by an employer of disciplinary action in respect of the individual.
